Back to School and Cold/Flu Season
Now that everyone is back from vacation and returned to school, here are some tips to keep healthy.
- With all of the homework your child is bringing home, make sure their book bags are not putting undue stress on their backs. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommend a child’s backpack weigh no more than 20 % of the child’s body weight.
- Choose book bags with wide, padded straps and teach your child to use both straps to equally distribute the weight. Organize the contents of the pack with the heaviest items closest to the back.
- Along with the homework, kids are bringing home cold and flu germs. Remind your kids to wash their hands thoroughly and frequently. And avoid touching their face.
- If cold symptoms develop, remember to cough or sneeze in a tissue or the bend of your elbow. Virus particles can travel up to 12 feet through the air when someone with a cold coughs or sneezes.
- Some ways to help ease cold symptoms, we recommend using Nasal saline drops in the nostrils, cool-mist humidifier to increase air moisture and drink plenty of fluids.
- To make nasal saline drops at home, mix 8 ounces of tap water with ¼ tsp of table salt. Use a bulb syringe to instill in nostrils.
- Remember to get plenty of sleep each night, eat 3 healthy meals and get your influenza vaccine. It is recommend for persons 6 months and older.
