The umbilical chord stump usually falls off in ten to fourteen days. Until that time you may use rubbing alcohol on the cord several times per day, apply with a Q-tip or Cotton ball. As the cord is separating there is often a few drops of blood which should not concern you. Redness and tenderness around the cord should be reported. Keep the diaper rolled down below the level of the cord. After separation, clean with soap and water and stop using rubbing alcohol.
